1. AI to protect endangered whales

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have issued final plans to safeguard endangered North American right whales from potential harm by offshore wind projects. Plans incorporate artificial intelligence and passive acoustic monitoring to track whale locations and assess wind development impacts. Strategies include avoiding offshore wind leases in whale-impact zones and setting noise limits during construction.

Amid increasing offshore wind projects, especially along the U.S. East Coast, where roughly 360 right whales remain globally, agencies stress climate change as the primary threat. They clarify that offshore wind preparations haven't harmed whales. The effort addresses multiple factors driving right whale decline, such as vessel strikes and low calving rates. As of September 2023, 30 offshore wind lease areas were identified along the East Coast, with 18 having construction and operations plans submitted to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. 2. AI models approved by China crosses 60

China has rapidly approved over 40 AI models for public use in the first six months since initiating the process, aligning with its ambition to compete with the U.S. in AI development. Last week, regulators cleared 14 large language models (LLMs), including recipients like Xiaomi Corp, 4Paradigm, and 01.AI. The regulatory framework, implemented since August, underscores China's intent to regulate AI technology under state control. Initial approvals went to tech giants like Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance. Despite the lack of a disclosed list, the total surpasses 40 approved AI models.
