Google uses AI to discover thousands of new materials

Google DeepMind's GNoME (Graph Networks for Materials Exploration) has contributed nearly 400,000 new compounds to the Materials Project, an open-access database for materials science. GNoME, a deep learning tool, generated 2.2 million crystal structures, with 380,000 added to the Materials Project. These additions, aimed at aiding the development of materials for future technologies, include information on crystal structures and formation energy. Google DeepMind's contributions were made using workflows and data developed over a decade by the Materials Project. The collaboration enhances researchers' ability to discover novel materials through advanced simulations and AI. Read more…

AI is getting good at solving Geometry problems
DeepMind's artificial intelligence (AI) system, AlphaGeometry, has demonstrated an ability to prove geometric facts at a level comparable to participants in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a competition for school students. The AI, when tested on 30 IMO geometry problems, solved 25 of them, aligning closely with gold medalists' performance. AlphaGeometry relies on a custom language for writing geometry proofs, using a structured syntax similar to computer programming. The AI was trained on 100 million machine-generated proofs, enabling it to provide reliable and accurate solutions to geometry problems. Read more…

OpenAI allows the use of AI tools for military applications
OpenAI has quietly reversed its ban on the military use of ChatGPT and other AI tools. The company's policies previously prohibited the usage of its models for military activities, including weapons development and warfare. However, the policies have been updated to remove the specific reference to the military, stating instead that users should not "use our service to harm yourself or others," including to "develop or use weapons." This change coincides with OpenAI's collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense on AI tools, including open-source cybersecurity tools. OpenAI aims to provide clarity and allow military use cases that align with its mission while maintaining restrictions on harmful applications. Read more…
