Intel's New Gaudi 3 AI Chip Takes On Nvidia With Better Performance and Efficiency
Intel has unveiled its latest AI chip, Gaudi 3, which is more power-efficient and faster than Nvidia's H100 GPU. The chip is designed for training and deploying large AI models and comes in various configurations. Intel aims to compete with Nvidia in the AI chip market, targeting cloud providers and businesses looking to reduce costs associated with AI. Apple's ReALM Excels at 'Seeing' and Understanding On-Screen Visuals Over GPT-4
Apple's ReALM is a lightweight AI system that outperforms GPT-4 in resolving complex references to on-screen entities and user conversations, making it an ideal solution for on-device virtual assistants. ReALM uses an LLM to process conversational, on-screen, and background entities, creating textual representations of the screen for the language model to process. This approach results in superior reference resolution, particularly in smaller versions of the model (80M parameters), which performs comparably with GPT-4 and outperforms the larger version (3B parameters). ReALM's smaller size and superior reference resolution make it an ideal choice for a virtual assistant that can exist on-device without compromising performance. However, it may not perform as well with more complex images or nuanced user requests, but it could work well as an in-car or on-device virtual assistant, such as a more advanced version of Siri that can "see" and respond to on-screen elements on a user's iPhone. OpenAI's Legal Mess: Battling Lawsuits and Probes
OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT service, is facing a wave of lawsuits and government investigations. The legal troubles began with comedian Sarah Silverman's complaint, alleging that OpenAI violates copyright law by training its algorithms on authors' work. Since then, top authors and media companies, including the New York Times, have joined the legal battle.
Billionaire Elon Musk has also sued OpenAI, accusing the company of diverging from its original nonprofit mission. Government agencies in the United States and Europe are investigating OpenAI for potential violations of competition, securities, and consumer protection laws. In response, OpenAI is hiring top legal and political minds, including Chris Lehane, a former press secretary for Al Gore's presidential campaign, to defend itself. The company is also positioning itself as a bulwark against China, supporting American economic and national security interests. OpenAI's legal challenges are part of a pattern in Silicon Valley, where companies initially celebrated for their technological achievements eventually face legal and political backlash for the perilous downsides of their products. Marvin the Mushroom
Marvin the mushroom was the most modest fungi around. While his mushroom buddies sprouted brilliantly colored caps, Marvin was just a drab little brown lump. One morning, Marvin awoke to find a kaleidoscope of glittering spores had landed on his cap overnight! The other mushrooms gasped at Marvin's dazzling new disco cap. "You're a fun-gi like no other!" they cried. Marvin preened, finally feeling like the showstopping shroom he was inside. From then on, he encouraged everyone to let their inner grooviness shine bright like his bejeweled lid. Confidence caps off any look!
